Bottoms Up

A third member of the Pendleton 8 , who has been charged with the kidnapping and murdering of an Iraqi civilian , has agreed to plead guilty to lesser charges .

The previous two to plead guilty, singled out their squad leader as hatching a plan to kidnap an insurgent. The military judicial system works in a "bottom up" process, in other words, each step takes you higher up the chain of command.

Bilbray Goes Behind Closed Doors With CNN President

This past weekend I interviewed California republican congressman Brian Bilbray on my radio show.

The same Brian Bilbray who has been an outspoken critic of CNN for airing a video of an Islamic-fundamentalist sniper shooting and killing an American soldier. (Congressmen Bilbray, Duncan Hunter (R-CA) and Darrell Issa (R-CA) each also sent a letter to Donald Rumsfeld calling for the removal of CNN news crews embedded with US military in Iraq).

Of course CNN has claimed the so-called high ground of journalistic integrity by stating this was "a side of the war Americans deserved to see", while media advocacy groups have  voiced concern  over  the infringement of freedom of the press.

Whichever way your view favors on this issue- and I can only guess- it was a comment by Bilbray on my radio show, not before made public, that caught my attention.

The Congressman revealed that he had a private, behind closed doors conversation with the president of CNN Worldwide, Jim Walton.

Bilbray explained that he had asked Walton to please take in to consideration the public relations value which the video represents to Islamic extremists. That "if the killing of one American soldier can produce one international news story, then, the incentive for creating more news stories- which have a perceived pr value- by killing more American soldiers on video...is clearly present".

Bilbray makes a powerful point that is very difficult to argue against.

Meanwhile Walton responded that he had not perceived any pr value for the extremists, but he would take Bilbray's opinion in to consideration.

Thank You La Jolla, California

The La Jolla Light newspaper this week, in its annual Best Of La Jolla survey, named Amato Wealth Management Group as THE TOP financial planning firm in La Jolla, California .

This is particularly humbling considering that virtually every major Wall Street firm in America maintains an office in La Jolla, in addition to the numerous boutique offices that dot the financial landscape.

On behalf of the staff and management at Amato Wealth Management Group, I would like to thank the La Jolla Light newspaper and its readers for the distinction.

I would also like to thank the staff and management of AWMG for its dedication to client service and professionalism, which in addition to creating satisfied clients, has allowed me to continue building The Rick Amato radio show and all that it entails. A gesture which I do not take lightly.

Thank You To All,
Rick Amato
Founder and President, AWMG

1 On 1 With Lou Dobbs

This past weekend I had the opportunity to interview Lou Dobbs as a guest on my radio show.

I found the interview fascinating on several levels and consider it as one of my more memorable interviews.

First off on a personal level, I have always been viewer of his programs. As someone with a financial background  (I began my career as a financial advisor with Merrill Lynch) Lou Dobbs, along with Louis Rukeyser, in my mind set the gold standard for television financial reporting in America. During the late 80’s and 90’s stockbrokers and financial advisors across the country frequently based their view of the financial world on what it was they heard nightly on ‘CNN Lou Dobbs Money Line’. The show was common topic of early morning conversation (and argument) in coffee rooms of brokerage offices across America.

While I have had the privilege of appearing as a guest on ‘Lou Dobbs Tonight’, this was his first time appearing as my guest. Aside from the obvious, radio is very different from television. As fabulous a median as television is, talk radio by its very nature allows for a much more personal and intimate experience between the host, guest and audience.

Therein lies the beauty of this interview.  This was Lou Dobbs as many may have never seen him before. Passionate, fire in the belly and dead-on candid on the receiving end of questions.

My listeners and I learned several new things about Mr. Dobbs. The first of which was ‘why, how and when did he go from financial and business reporting to that of a cultural warrior’?  After all he had been branded so strongly in our minds as a business journalist and then one day he seemed to re-appear taking on illegal immigration, job outsourcing and the like.

To this he attributes the emotional events of September 11th, corporate corruption scandals and what he sees as the vanishing American dream for the middle-class. These events led him to become what he calls an advocacy journalist.

And boy has he ever advocated. He has taken on our nations illegal immigration policies (or lack thereof), U.S. trade policies which have eliminated or outsourced American middle class manufacturing jobs and federal deficits which he calls an ‘estate tax on the middle class and their children’.

Confidently, he pointed out that because of his background and grasp of the subject matter, it is difficult- if not impossible- for CEO’s , trade policy makers and elected officials to appear as his guest and ‘skirt around the truth’.

In his new book - War on the Middle Class: How the Government, Big Business, and Special Interest Groups Are Waging War on the American Dream and How to Fight Back- he takes aim at both the republican and democratic parties and the special interest groups which they are beholden to.

The book is an excellent blue print for anyone concerned about under representation in Washington and what to do about it.

Recently CNN announced it is giving a newly prominent role to Dobbs including coverage alongside Anderson Cooper and Wolf Blitzer of November’s midterm elections. It was also announced that ‘Lou Dobbs Tonight’ is up 22 percent in viewers this year over last, a bigger increase than any show on CNN or Fox News Channel.

American classics always seem to manage to stay in vogue.

Judge Rules Pendleton 8 Member 'A Flight Risk'

A military judge has ruled that Pendleton 8 member Lance Cpl Jerry Shumate , age 21, is a flight risk and should be not released from confinement while awaiting trial.  Shumate is one of seven Marines charged in the April 26 death of Iraqi villager Hashim Ibrahim Awad.

Shumate's mother, Diann, told Lt. Col. Jeffrey Meeks that "Jerry wouldn't go nowhere because his family is here," describing them as a working-class family struggling to make ends meet.

The Shumate family lives in Matlock, Washington where Lance Cpl Shumate once starred as a quarterback on the small town high school football team.

Shumates father, a guest on my radio show two weeks ago, said he is a supporter of America's war in Iraq and is proud that is son was "fighting the enemy over there, so that we do not have to fight them here".

Arrogance On Both Sides Of The Aisle

Senator Harry Reid of Nevada collected $1 million for land he hadn't owned for 3 years, according to today's article in The Washington Times.

During this past summer's special election to replace the imprisoned Randy "Duke" Cunningham, the democrats used ethics - or lack thereof- as their campaign theme message.

All Quiet On The Western Front

Have you noticed how calm and quiet the news (or lack of) has been regarding the Pendleton 8?

Last Friday there was a flurry of information, rumors, speculation of who is going to cut a deal...who is not, who will be removed from the brig...who will not?

Since then it has been noticably silent.

Pendleton 8 UPDATE!

UPDATE: Even as it was determined that Navy Corpsman Melson Bacos was indeed entering into a Pre-Trial Agreement, or PTA , rumors began to circulate that another 3 deals were in the works. Apparently PFC Jodka had been physically separated from the others still in the Camp Pendleton Brig. Following Bacos' testimony, it would be likely that deals would also be offered to the least culpable with Jodka, LCPL Jerry Shumate and LCPL Tyler Jackson.

Also based on Bacos' testimony today, the greater participation and responsibility for criminal actions will fall to the remaining four Marines, SGT Lawrence Hutchins, CPL Marshall “Magic” Magincalda, CPL Trent Thomas, and CPL Robert Pennington. Deals amongst these 4 remain a strong possibility.

Details of any Pre-Trial Agreements for the Marines would not be released until finalized, with Sentencing not determined until the sentencing phase of each Court Martial. According to the Uniform Code of Military Justice, or UCMJ, the presiding Military Judge determines an appropriate sentence without knowing the recommendation contained in the formal PTA. Once his recommendation is in the record, the PTA sentence is entered, and the lesser of the two sentences is imposed. In HM3 Bacos’ case, the PTA includes a sentence of less than 12 months in the Brig (a sentence of over 12 months must be carried out in a United States Penitentiary; i.e., Leavenworth). So Colonel Steven Folson, the Military Judge conducting Bacos’ Court Martial taking place this morning, can impose a lesser sentence, including time served, but not a greater one.

It’s likely that neither story put out by the Prosecution nor the Defense is an accurate portrayal of what happened that night, and only over time will the bits and pieces be able to be put together.

Pendleton 8 Breaking News!

One of the Pendleton 8 members is expected to plead guilty to two charges related to the April 26 slaying of Hashim Ibrahim Awad in the Iraqi village of Hamdania.

More deals are rumored to be in the making:

It is being reported that PFC John Jodka has been moved to Miramar, the location where Bacos had been moved to after making his deal.

PFC John Jodka, Navy Corpsman Melson Bacos, LCPL Tyler Jackson, and LCPL Jerry Shumate are the four troops charged in the incident at Hamdania.

While, CPL Marshall “Magic” Magincalda,  CPL Robert Pennington SGT Lawrence Hutchins,  and CPL Trent Thomas,  remain in the brig at Camp Pendleton and are continuing to state their innocence.

CPL Penington's attorney, David Brahms while speaking by phone told me, "this merely represents yet another hurdle for the defense to overcome".

Keep checking back for updates as this is obviously a fluid situation...and bear in mind that during situations such as this...all is not always as it appears to be.

Let's wait for all the facts to come in, which I have advocated from the beginning.
